Declare a Major or Minor

If you are an undeclared student who wishes to specify a major:

  • You must use the Change of Major Petition
  • A signature is required from the new major department
  • Submit petition to the college Dean's office in which major is listed

If you want to change your major:

  • You must use the Change of Major Petition
  • Your new department must sign the form before your old department
  • Some departments require the completion of prerequisite courses with a minimum GPA before you can change into the major
  • Submit petition to the college Dean's office in which new major is listed
  • You must complete 1 quarter at UCD before changing your major

If you want to declare a double major:

  • You must use the Change of Major Petition and the Multiple Major Approval Form
  • You must complete 2 upper division courses in each major before declaring the double major
  • You must be able to complete BOTH majors plus all University/College requirements within the 225 unit limit

If you want to declare a minor:

  • You must use the Declare a Minor Petition
  • You do not need to declare your minor until the quarter before you graduate
  • It must be signed by both the major and minor departments
  • It is best to wait until minor courses have been finalized before submitting the petition. If any course changes are made after turning in the petition, you must submit a revised copy (also signed by both the major and minor advisor).
